Old Interurban Car – Van Alstyne,TX

Old Interurban Car - Van Alstyne,TX - Photo Keith LaursenOn the east side of the Van Alstyne Square are two original Interurban Freight Cars on display. They give you an idea of what the Interurban was like.  The Interurban last ran in 1948.  You can find a section of the original track on the other side of the square. It’s too bad they couldn’t have been placed back on the tracks but that would have been a real traffic problem.

You can see a picture of what the passenger car looked like and also learn what the downtown historical marker says here.

There is also more information from Texas A&M on the Texas Electric Railway and a pictures of Interurban passenger and freight cars in Van Alstyne back in the day.  Of course if you want to see what life was really like and a close up of those pictures from the link above, just visit the Van Alstyne Historical Museum or you see some really great history on the Van Alstyne Public Library digital collection.
